Northumbria Healthcare provides a Birth Reflection Service which combines midwifery, medical and psychological expertise to support women when the delivery of their baby did not go as they had expected or when intrapartum complications arose.  A delivery perceived to be difficult can also result in maternal anxiety in subsequent pregnancies.

We are passionate about effectively engaging women in talking about about their birth stories and increasing professional awareness of birth trauma. We are willing to provide our birth trauma training to midwifery, obstetric, health visiting and mental health service colleagues.

The context of this training is:

  • What is psychological birth trauma or post natal PTSD?

  • What is different about birth trauma from other trauma presentations

  • Birth trauma: presentation, recognition, and the consequences of misdiagnosis

  • Prevention, management and treatment of perinatal birth trauma

  • Working with birth stories and women’s experience of obstetric care

Evaluation so far demonstrated that 97% of participants identified that the training had added to their theoretical knowledge and would positively impact on their clinical practice. As part of the wider project, we have developed a midwife led birth reflections service, on a pathway to psychological interventions.
