At Warwick Hospital, there is a dedicated perinatal psychology service within maternity services. The service provides support to women, their babies and partners, and also offers training and consultation to all members of the maternity service team. The psychology service works closely with other members of staff to promote a psychologically-minded approach throughout the service. All midwives in the Trust have specialist training in perinatal mental health and how to support women.

As a large group of referrals to the service were for women with birth trauma symptoms, the team agreed that a pink 'alert sticker' would be put on to women's notes to identify those who had particular mental health or psychological needs. This would alert all staff to read the appropriate section of the notes outlining the woman's symptoms, relevant history and agreed needs.

The service has seen a 44% reduction in women being referred due to traumatic birth.
